Earwax is a yellowish substance created in the ear canal – its purpose is to protect the skin, assist in cleaning and protect from bacteria, fungi and liquids entering.
It is usually harmless and has many benefits that make it important to our health. However, sometimes too much can build up meaning the ears get blocked, causing pain and hearing loss.
There’s no particular reason why some people get blocked ears, they just naturally produce a lot of earwax. Frequently inserting objects into your ear canal such as cotton buds or heading aids can also increase likelihood.
Although you should contact an expert, olive oil drops can help to alleviate the problem at home.
Health professionals recommend placing 3-4 drops of olive oil in the affected ear. This should be done for around 4 consecutive days to feel the effect.
After the process is complete, use some warm water to flush out your ears, in the bath or shower is an ideal time to do this. If you suspect you may have a perforated or damaged ear drum, do not use olive oil to soften or remove ear wax.
If, after using olive oil spray or other remedies to clear your blocked ears, your hearing doesn’t improve, consider a more comprehensive treatment. At The Hearing Centre we’re are able to perform microsuction earwax removal procedures using a finely calibrated suction device.
