warning signs of hearing loss

It is a common perception that hearing loss is easy to spot, but it’s not as noticeable as you might expect.

Firstly, most people have problems only within specific circumstances. Consequently, if you can hear well on some occasions it is easy to place the blame on factors out of your control such as somebody not talking loud enough. Hearing loss also develops over time so this can make it particularly difficult to detect the development.

Signs of hearing loss

While it is easier to reject the thought that you may have hearing loss, you should be honest with yourself and be aware of the signs:

  • Ringing in the ears: this can be a sign of permanent hearing damage or tinnitus.
  • Unable to hear normal household sounds: hearing loss can make it difficult to hear every day sounds like the doorbell and telephone.
  • Technology set to maximum volume: being able to hear the TV or phone conversations better than personal conversations is a strong warning sign.
  • Relying on lip reading: you may be dependent on seeing the person talking, and other non-verbal communication, to make out what they’re saying. If you can’t follow a conversation with your back to the speaker, you may have trouble following speech.

If any of these signs ring true with your hearing, it is important to get your hearing properly tested.
