Frequently Asked Questions

Why Do we have Earwax?
Also known by the medical term ‘cerumen’, Earwax is a yellowish waxy substance that protects the skin ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, insects and water.

Earwax does not usually cause any problems, but if too much earwax is produced it can lead to a blocked and painful ear or hearing loss. It can also affect the operation of hearing aids, causing them to whistle, produce feedback noises and reduce the quality of sound.

How much does it cost?
We charge £70 for our microsuction procedure in total. During the appointment we will remove any earwax or debris from both ears and show you before and after. If we don’t find any wax, we’ll complete a full ear health check, which costs £35.
Does it hurt?
Microsuction is deemed one of the safest methods of earwax removal. During the procedure you should not feel any pain or discomfort.
Where do you offer microsuction appointments?

You can access our microsuction service at our Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Birstall  & Market Harborough clinics.

Do I need to use olive oil before attending my appointment?

We would recommend using olive oil prior to your appointment. We recommend Earol Olive Oil Spray and advise that you use for 2-3 days between 1-2 times daily before your appointment. If you have any concerns about the application of olive oil please call our team on 01858 437 597

What happens if you cant remove the blockage?
Our audiologist have over 30 years combined experience in hearing services and normally can remove the blockage comfortably at your first appointment. If however we are unable to remove the blockage for whatever reason we will invite you back for a free follow up to complete the procedure*
Microsuction vs ear syringing
Microsuction is widely considered to be a much safer and more effective earwax removal method compared to ear syringing, as it avoids touching the sensitive skin of the ear canal and will have no contact with the ear drum. As no water is introduced into the ear with microsuction the risk of infection is also reduced.

Advice before your appointment….

Safety
Please call us before your appointment if you’ve experienced any of the following:

  • Current or recurrent ear infection
  • Fluid or discharge from inside your ear
  • Previous operations in or around the ear
  • Suspect you have any foreign bodies in the ear canal
  • Suspect you have a perforated eardrum
  • Are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
  • Are required to isolate after travelling
  • Have been contacted from NHS Test and Trace

During your appointment, you might be required to wear a mask to reduce any risk of transmission.

Softening wax before your appointment
It may take more than one attempt to remove your wax. It’s important that the wax has been softened to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible – so to prepare for your appointment, we would recommend using olive oil to soften it.

A spray known an Earol is ideal for this. Read the instructions leaflet carefully and use for 2-3 days between 1-2 times daily before your appointment. Other sprays or drops are not always suitable and may prevent us from being able to carry out the removal.

You can purchase Earol spray from our online store.

Your ears might feel more blocked up after using olive oil and might reduce your hearing – this is because the wax will soak up the oil.

For some people, olive oil use might cause some mild discomfort or irritation. If you have any doubts or concerns, just give us a call or speak to your GP or pharmacist.
