Winter hearing aid tips

The cold months through winter can be particularly harsh on hearing aids for a number of reasons. Whether it’s the colder temperatures or the high level of moisture in the air, hearing aid users can find it difficult to keep their device working properly throughout the colder seasons.

Winter hearing aid tips

Following the drop in temperature over the past weeks, we thought that it would be useful to explain, for new hearing aid users especially, what to expect and to offer some tips for operating your hearing aid through winter.

  • Be aware of condensation. People with glasses will be familiar with this problem but hearing aid users are unable to see the effects when they aren’t right in front of their eyes. Condensation can get into the sensitive electronics so it is important to be conscious of it.
  • Cover them up. To protect the devices from the frosty weather, cover them with hats, scarves or earmuffs; these will act as the first line of defence.
  • At low temperatures batteries can fail or have a decreased battery life. When you start to have a problem with your hearing aid, you should first check the batteries. Covering them will protect from the cold but it may also be wise to carry a few spare batteries with you too.
  • As well as the cold, you will be faced with an influx of increased moisture. Water and moisture can result in malfunction, corrosion and can reduce volume. Signs of moisture damage include: the hearing aid cutting out during loud noises, sounds come in with static, sounds are warped and unclear.

Our audiologists are able to advise you on which hearing aid is most suitable for you and find what you are comfortable with.
