The number of Brits experiencing hearing loss has been gradually increasing over the years, and new predictions suggest that the numbers are showing no signs of slowing down.

National charity Action on Hearing Loss has estimated that by 2035 the number of people suffering in Britain will rise to 15.6 million – one fifth of the population. The forecast is supported by predictions by The World Health Organisation that hearing loss will be one of the UK’s top 10 health problems by 2030.

Why are hearing loss numbers rising?

Britain has an ageing population and age-related hearing loss is the most common form of hearing loss. The link between the two is unquestionable. Approximately three quarters of the people with hearing loss in the UK are over 60. So, as the average age increases so will the number of people with hearing loss.

Research has proven that people with hearing loss are at a greater risk of mental health issues than the general population. Untreated hearing loss can lead to a lower quality of life, including a risk of loneliness and depression, due to problems communicating. With hearing loss on the increase, there is a risk that many more people will experience negative effects before seeking help.

It is important to get treatment for hearing loss as soon as you notice the signs of hearing loss.
